چکیده

We investigate partial insurance and group risk sharing in extended family networks. Our approach is based on decomposing income shocks into group aggregate and idiosyncratic components, allowing us to measure the extent to which each is insured, having accounted for public insurance programs. We apply our framework to extended family networks in the United States by exploiting the unique intergenerational structure of the PSID. We find that over 60% of shocks to household income are potentially insurable within family networks. However, we find little evidence that the extended family provides insurance for such idiosyncratic shocks. ∗Orazio Attanasio: [email protected], Costas Meghir: [email protected], Corina Mommaerts: [email protected]. Mitigating the consequences of a health condition: The role of intra- and interhousehold assistance.

The behavior of noncoresident family members motivates much of the literature on consumption smoothing, risk-sharing, and informal networks, yet little is known empirically on the topic due to a lack of data simultaneously observing multiple households in an extended family. This study utilizes genealogically linked longitudinal data to examine how extended family networks insure against financ...

Risk-sharing and endogenous network formation

In economic literature insurance networks are often treated as exogenous institutions. Frequently, the assumption is made that some clearly identifiable group (e.g. ‘the whole village’ or ‘the extended family’) constitutes an insurance network. Still, theory suggests that the formation of insurance links depends on a myriad of factors related to smooth information flows, norms, trust, the abili...

Mining Overlapping Communities in Real-world Networks Based on Extended Modularity Gain

Detecting communities plays a vital role in studying group level patterns of a social network and it can be helpful in developing several recommendation systems such as movie recommendation, book recommendation, friend recommendation and so on. Most of the community detection algorithms can detect disjoint communities only, but in the real time scenario, a node can be a member of more than one ...

The Continuity of the Extended Family Structure within Contemporary Single-Family Houses Case Study: Afghan Immigrant Households in Iran

This research is aimed at reviving the positive aspects of extended family households. The impacts of extended family living on housing design are studied in two steps. Aside from courtyard houses, numerous other models of extended family housing are introduced and it ...
